I’ve been hanging out with Michelle Obama these last few weeks - well, it feels that way as I read her book. ❤️ I was a huge fan and I knew she was a class act, but getting the backstories and life context has moved me tremendously. She’s truly made the world a better place. As a beautiful, black woman overflowing with dignity, a family woman committed to supporting her sphere of people, and a lawyer/advocate/FLOTUS for women and people everywhere, she continues to do. good. anyway.
I’ve loved reading parts aloud to my kids. They’ve cheered on her victories which are all of our victories. Do good anyways, children.

It’s a super cool honor to be the featured alumni at our alma mater @andersonuniversity next week. ☺️🙏🏼 Join us for a cozy and fun Valentine’s Day evening at Anderson University York Performance Hall. Concert begins at 7:30pm. We will perform for about an hour - original tunes and a couple covers that will fit the day’s theme. ❤️ Joining us is Bethany Robinson @bassbethany on bass.
We’d love to spend Valentine’s Day with you! 💋 📷 cred :: Melissa McNeil Hanley @melissahanleyphotography
I’m sitting with my weekend a bit. Thinking about my kiddos.
In the world of bloggers and social media influencers, there is certainly a current trend toward “curated imperfection”. In an effort to be “distinct” and to “keep it real” and to combat the “life highlight reel” that is often presented, many have a (somewhat ironic) schtick of keeping things meaningful, but slightly disheveled. 1 part beauty, 1 part deconstruction.

I say all this to put it out there that I’m aware of the machine. In an effort to not just show said reel, I want to include the layers. With that comes a tendency to shy away from sharing a plain-ol-wonderful-highlight though. It feels incomplete, somehow. In the context of everything, I think it’s important to let the celebrations be just that, celebrations. Know what I’m saying? What I’m saying is I want to say something awesome about my kids right now.

Just like me, they are whole people. There’s a lot going on - the good, bad, the ugly. But this post is for the good today.
So…

Jeff and I both wanted to attend a workshop our worship ministry was putting on this past Saturday morning. We’d both been encouraging each other to take the opportunity to go while the other would stay home with the kids. After the snowpocalypse and 3 days of being iced in with e-learning and sick kids and sleepless nights, we were both tap dancing around the idea that neither of us really wanted to miss the chance to get out on Saturday morning. So, we tossed out the idea of leaving our 11-year-old McBaby #1 in charge of babysitting all 5 kids. We’ve done this to make 20-min errands, but never for a window of a few hours.
We asked her if she’d be up for it. She was. We covered all the important things required to try this. We made sure neighbors were home and on call. We left a cell phone for her and kept ours on and available. We crossed foods-with-peels off the snack list. And, frankly, we anticipated them rotting their brains on iPads and TV for the morning. And we were okay with that as long as they also made sure each other did the same thing. Haha.

What we didn’t anticipate was what we came home to. Coming in (continued in comments...)
News came to me today about an acquaintance. It was tragic, devastating news (that isn’t mine to tell) and it left me broken with emotion today. I cried off and on thinking about it. •
I’ve had a lot of sacred moments with my children, but the following one takes the cake, hands down.
•
I knelt down and cried this afternoon. And my sweet little Willow came over to me. “Are you still sad Momma?” “Yes, sweetie, I really am.” She looked at me and tears filled her eyes. “I can be sad with you Momma.” And she knelt down and cried with me. That’s the gospel. (Willow L, Jane R)

Thought I’d share a few pictures that @bethwilson.photography shot at our holiday shows. Thanks girl!!! Also a very short clip of a few tunes. LOVED our run of 5 shows with the uber-talented @jonmclaughlin (you’ll see a few pictures of us in the midst of thinking we’re JUST SO HILARIOUS 😋🙄🤣). These events sum up my life‘s work so much - family, music and being around the table. Love being able to feel that cozy vibe. 👏🏻👏🏻 Thanks again for making it a tradition... i’ve been tight lipped but have a few awesome things in 2019 coming up that I’m excited to tell you about soon!!!!
